Nintendo Kills September Wii Release Talk
The dream is smashed after just a day. But the door is still open for a soonish release.
The summer of Wii is off the cards. Speculation was rampant this week after a prominent columnist citing unnamed sources said that Nintendo's new system could arrive as early as late in September. The company has shot down that theory, but it left open the window for an early autumn release.
"There's no change in our plan to release the console in the last quarter of this year," Nintendo's Yasuhiro Minagawa told Bloomberg. "We are planning an announcement in September and it may be causing some confusion.''
The rumours flared when CNN columnist Chris Morris wrote that he had been told by industry insiders that the Wii could launch in late September or October.
Nintendo said earlier in the year that its new console would be available in the fourth quarter of the year and that the release details would be announced in September - possibly at the Tokyo Game Show, which hosted Nintendo's unveiling of the Wii controller in 2005.
