The year in gaming started in much the same way as it would end it, with gamers asking where the hardware was. The DS was selling like gangbusters in January, with total sales hitting 10 million units worldwide, and Nintendo announced the DS Lite too. But the Xbox 360, which had been released over the last two months of 2005 in all three major regions, was nowhere to be found.



No matter. Microsoft was still doing its share to keep the console in the spotlight, announcing that it was working on an HD-DVD add-on drive, which would counter the Blu-ray drive Sony was planning for the PlayStation 3. Microsoft's Peter Moore said in a January interview that were Blu-ray to dominate HD-DVD, the modular nature of the Xbox 360 meant that Microsoft could slot one in if they wanted to - which they didn't.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was on the defensive too. He took back his comments from 2005 where he predicted Halo 3 would go head-to-head with the PlayStation 3 at launch. Gates said in an interview that Bungie would take however long it wanted with the game, and that's clearly exactly what they've done.

Delays for the PlayStation 3 were looking more likely, and one US analyst predicated that Europe wouldn't see the machine until spring 2007. Another group of prognosticators took a stab at the price, settling on $500 as a likely candidate.
