It's been a long time coming, but Final Fantasy III has been upgraded and makes a return to Nintendo's DS, bringing portable RPG joy to legions of fanatics across the globe. With an awe inspiring intro sequence and new 3D environments, FFIII still retains the charm and loveable characters that have made the long running series such a success over the years.

"It would've been an easy trap to fall into: to tailor everything to the dual and touch screen, but they've mostly ignored this option."

It would have been an easy trap to fall into to tailor everything to the dual and touch screen system on DS. The developers at Square Enix have mostly ignored this option. It's possible to use the touch screen to move your characters around the world, although using the buttons comes much more naturally. FFIII runs almost entirely on the touch screen, with the top screen remaining blank for the most part, although it is used to display the map when you're exploring the world outside of cities and dungeons.

The gameplay is traditional RPG fare, familiar to anyone who's played the games that this classic helped to spawn. You wander from town to town, talking to inhabitants, meeting people who join your party and venturing into caves and dungeons to slay monsters and megalomaniacs who have been plaguing the local populace.

The storyline will also bring deja-vu to anyone who's played a turn-based RPG before. You start the game as a young orphan named Luneth, who has fallen down a hole into a goblin infested cave. As you kill the denizens of the dark, Luneth slowly builds up his strength and becomes more powerful. When you reach the end of the cave a magical crystal informs you that the balance of the world has been lost.

The forces of darkness have gained the upper hand, and you've been chosen to become a warrior of the light. The forces of light and darkness are in constant flux. Every thousand years one side gains the upper hand and the other will pick 4 warriors to venture into the world and restore the balance. It is your job to find the other 3 warriors of light and redress the situation.

Combat against the nasties is handled in typical turn based fashion. You select you attack/power/spell or item to use, then stats are used to decide what order the combatants perform their moves. A new job system complements the traditional strength/intelligence/agility ratings for each of your characters, and as you progress through the game, more jobs types are unlocked without so much as a visit to the Job Centre! Picking a good balance in your party is necessary if you hope to defeat the endless stream of monsters that roam around the world
