The sense of been-there-done-that extends to some of the puzzles in Twilight Princess too. I'm sure neophytes will struggle at times, but Zelda fans will instantly see how to solve a large percentage of them, especially in the early stages of the game when there is still more handholding.

The boss battles also aren't nearly as challenging as you would expect after the slog through the lengthy dungeons. Still, Nintendo has once again nailed the sense of progression that comes with learning new skills and earning new weapons. There are few thrills as great as earning a new skill and then remembering that one item you couldn't get to earlier that is now suddenly within your reach.

These quibbles don't detract from what is often a magical experience. For the most part the excellent balance and pacing keep things fresh - not an easy task for a game that spans dozens of hours. The best thing about it is that it really does feel like an adventure. This isn't a game for you to check off after a few hours. Twilight Princess is a journey that demands your attention. All you need to do is submit.

"You'll savour most of the 50-hour adventure... when it's as good as this, it's worth it."

I don't have nearly the kind of time these days to play games as I did when earlier Zelda games came around, so I usually wince when I hear about overly long experiences. Can it really take 50 hours to tell a story? In this case, Nintendo has made full use of the game, giving you a solid core of excellent mechanics and an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment the further you get.

THE VERDICT:
The Wii controls do feel tacked on, but they do have some advantages and at least they're not obnoxious. If you want to lose yourself in a game for a month, Zelda is the one to get.
