8. Crackdown (Xbox 360)

Many people will remember Crackdown as the game that came with the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta key. That's a shame. Because Realtime Worlds' first game on the Xbox 360 showed just how much fun an open world can be.
Sure, there's a story tying it all together, but the best part of Crackdown is how it gives you the keys, shows you the world and tells you to go make your own fun. And thanks to your character's superhuman athletic abilities, monstrous weapons and hulking vehicles, having fun is something that's all too easy to do. You can even bring a friend along for the online multiplayer modes, creating new ways to explore and enjoy the world.
7. Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)

Chided by some for its somewhat repetitive gameplay, Assassin's Creed makes the list nonetheless for both its innovative approach to gameplay and a storyline that keeps you guessing right until the end (and beyond).
The developers at Ubisoft's studio in Montreal, versed in high-altitude action thanks to the Prince of Persia games, have outdone themselves here, blending the stealthy features of a Third Crusade's assassin with the thrill of rooftop gymnastics using simple-yet-addictive free-running techniques. It's all packaged in a thrilling adventure that will see you crisscross the Holy Land in search of the truth, and much more.
6. Halo 3 (Xbox 360)

After the disappointing cliff-hanger ending to Halo 2, millions of fans waited patiently to finish the fight in Halo 3, Microsoft's biggest Xbox 360 game of the year. The Covenant bring the battle to Earth, and it's up to you to save the day. Hardly original, you'll agree, but what makes it interesting is the execution. The story mode can be played solo or with up to three other people, all of you working together to kick the invaders from your home. The story is neatly wrapped up in Halo 3, closing down the current story arc. Like Halo 2, though, that's far from all this game brings with it.
The multiplayer modes are the real life-bringers in Halo 3, offering the refined, balanced online skirmishes the series has become legendary for. Considering how long people stuck around playing Halo 2 online, it's a fair bet that Master Chief's last will be around for some years to come.
