November
The success of the DS carried over to November, demonstrating just how much buzz there was surrounding the portable powerhouse. In October Nintendo sold its 4-millionth DS in the UK and during November the handheld sold more units of hardware in a week than ever before in the country - better even than any launch week.
As if to prove that there was still much to like about low-power hardware, Sony in November revealed that it was preparing another hardware revision of the PlayStation 2. This new unit would be even thinner and lighter than the already-svelte previous model and would have an internal power supply too. Sales of the PS2 have been strong throughout the year and that's before the inevitable price cuts still to come that will push it into impulse-buy territory.
Not waiting for price drops are the millions of fans of Pro Evolution Soccer but many of them were disappointed this year by a version that on the more powerful systems was riddled with bugs. In an oddly upfront move, Konami admitted that it was having problems and vowed to put out an update to fix the game.
While Microsoft was lapping up the sales of hardcore-oriented games such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 and Halo 3 in 2007, it was also making a more concerted effort to get into the casual market. In November the company released Scene It, a trivia title based on the enormously successful DVD game series of the same name.
For core gamers, though, November brought more interesting news. Cory Barlog, the director of God of War II, announced that he was leaving Sony. And in the process of allaying fears that this meant trouble for the God of War series, Sony finally went on the record about work going on on a third game destined for the PlayStation 3.
Several new games were revealed during November, including a new Ghostbusters game, which is being positioned as a full sequel; a follow-up to the massively successful shooter Rainbow Six Vegas that picks up the story after the first game's somewhat abrupt ending; and a console version of PC strategy hit Supreme Commander.
The Manhunt 2 mess took a new turn in November when it turned out the cleaned up version of the game that had been released in the US wasn't so clean after all. The video filter that Rockstar had shoe-horned in to obscure some of the excessive gore was rendered void by the work of a hacking group. In the UK, meanwhile, Rockstar was still pleading its case in front of the Video Appeals Committee in an attempt to get the game approved for release.
