E3 2003: R: Racing Evolution
Namco's new racing title was shown in video form at the show - so what was it like? Our impressions plus the first screens.
After the graphical, musical, and gameplay marvel that was Ridge Racer V, Namco takes to the streets once again in what could turn out to be one of their biggest racers yet. R: Racing Evolution is set to be Namco's first multiplatform racing release and should be available for the Gamecube, X-box, and PS2 sometime in the fall.
The brief video shown of the game displayed what looked to be a high octane arcade style racer that should satisfy the appetites of high speed arcade racing junkies everywhere. Unfortunately the video focussed mostly on the cinematic cut-scenes and replay scenes and didn't seem to show any in-game footage. Regardless of that, with Namco's track record of providing beautifully artistic environments and highly addictive gameplay, one can only wait patiently for what they may have in store for their newest racing offering.
When released, R: Racing Evolution will contain 11 tracks consisting of real world and fantasy based locations and will include 8 different racing styles. Also included in this feature rich game will be plenty of licensed real world vehicles that allow for upgrades and modifications as well as a Reward Point system that will allow you to power up and acquire new vehicles. The game will also feature a Story mode and an In-game radio feature to keep track of Incoming transmissions from crew members as well as from rival drivers.
Having thoroughly enjoyed Ridge Racer V on the PS2 -(It's my favorite PS2 racer)! I was definitely chomping at the bits in hopes that Namco would grace us with another Ridge Racer V style racer soon and R: RACING EVOLUTION looks to fit the bill quite nicely.
R: Racing Evolution is set for a Q4 2003 release.
