Mojib Ribbon: Hands-On, Screens and Video
The sequel to the furiously popular cult classic Vib Ribbon is here. Impressions, plus first ever direct feed screens and video footage.
One of the most prominent games at Sony's Tokyo Game Show booth this year was Mojib Ribbon, the sequel to the awesomely good Vib Ribbon, probably the best, most simple and addictive rhythm action game ever released on PlayStation.
The sequel is described as a 'word rhythm' game, because as well as combining the rhythm action elements of the original, Mojib lets you paint a story in words as you go along!
Using just up and down on the controller or analog stick, you control an oil-painted character holding a paintbrush. Walking around a rotating disc (also oil painted) you have to hit the mark at exactly the right point, and the character will jot down a letter. Eventually these letters become a sentence or a phrase.
As you go along, you have to top up the ink in your pen, by hitting up when a special marker appears before a new phrase. If you run out of in, it's game over - so this is an important thing to take care of as you progress through the levels.
Eventually a story is produced, and you can apparently create or download new stories using some kind of special feature - but since the creation of a story depends solely on your rhythm action ability, the whole 'writing a story' thing is more of a gimmick. But...
This is a good thing, as it means the text jotted down could in theory easily be replaced with English letters, words and phrases, to make a story in English. And that makes a western release possible - soon, we hope.
This is definitely one to keep an eye on. Check out these screens and our direct feed video to see the game in action - and stay tuned for more.
