Nintendo Machine: Not Cube Successor
Nintendo have announced a Kyoto press event starting next Thursday and hinted at first glimpse of next hardware. Plus: New Mario and Zelda this year?

But the firm has also hinted at the first appearance of its enigmatic next machine, which according to Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, will not be a successor to GameCube or GBA. "I expect it to become a third pillar, next to GameCube and Game Boy," he explained.
When Iwata first began hinting at new Nintendo hardware that was not N5, the machine that will succeed GameCube, it caught most of the industry off-guard. Just what exactly could this "innovative" new hardware be? Iwata-san mentioned April 2004 as the date the new hardware would be unveiled for the first time.
Today the nature of the hardware is made no clearer, with Iwata stating it will "enable fun and movement not seen before." If more becomes known at the press event next week, we'll have all the details right here immediately.
Meanwhile, the latest edition of Electronic Gaming Monthly says that new Mario and Zelda titles will both be released this year on GameCube. If true, then perhaps the company's E3 2004 package will rectify the immense disappointment of last year's conference.
