Microsoft Keeps Number Two Position
Microsoft reveals its half year results, showing Xbox sales of 3.7 Million Consoles in Europe, cementing "clear number-two position".
Microsoft's European Xbox division today announced the latest numbers in the battle for "second place" - fresh from independent body Chart Track and market research group, CfK.
Second-quarter financial results announced by Microsoft show that Xbox has sold more than 3.7 million consoles life-to-date in Europe up to 31st December 2003. Sales were buoyed by fantastic-value offers at retail, as well as a strong Christmas line-up.
Over the 2003 calendar year, Xbox achieved year-on-year growth in market share in Europe, putting it in a clear number-two position in the video game console market, according to Chart Track and Gfk data.
Xbox closed out the calendar year with cumulative worldwide shipments of 13.7 million consoles since launch, and according to the announcement, continues to be on track to meet its worldwide shipment goal of 14.5-16M units by the end of FY 04 in June.
Meanwhile in stat land, Xbox achieved a software attach rate of 5.2 in Europe in 2003, with the firm pointing out that "no other console in this generation has reached this attach rate level so quickly in its lifecycle".
