Mortal Kombat Goes Adventuring
A genre switch for the next instalment.
Midway Games has announced that its long-running Mortal Kombat series is making a genre switch for its next instalment.
Ditching the series' fighting roots, Midway is instead working on a game entitled Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks - an action adventure game closely tied to the Mortal Kombat universe.
"For the first time ever, Mortal Kombat fanatics will get to explore all the mythos and rumours of the Mortal Kombat universe from an entirely new perspective," said Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon.
"Action and adventure fans will be blown away by the intuitive combat system, puzzle-solving and epic storyline that can be experienced in either the single player mode or through co-op play."
According to Midway CEO David F Zucker, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is part of the company's response to fans' desire for more regular entries in the franchise. Midway is using the current project as a starting point to releasing one Mortal Kombat game per year.
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is in development for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The game is currently scheduled for release in autumn 2005.
