Nintendo DS Sells Out on Pre-Orders
US retailer has stopped taking pre-orders.
Even though the handheld isn't due for release until later this month, the Nintendo DS is already a hit. US retailer Gamestop has stopped taking pre-orders for the portable system, amid fears that it may not be able to meet early customer demand.
A Gamestop representative told IGN that the company would not be reserving any more units, stating: "We had to stop taking pre-orders for the DS because we met our goal."
The Nintendo DS is Nintendo's latest portable gaming platform. Its major selling point is its unique, dual-screen design. One of the screens is also touch-sensitive, which Nintendo hopes will spur developers to create innovative games.
The portable is scheduled for release in North America on 21 November for $149. The package includes a demo version of Metroid Prime Hunters, the Nintendo DS instalment in the popular Metroid franchise.
Approximately 12 games have been confirmed to launch alongside the hardware in North America, including Super Mario 64 DS, an enhanced version of the best-selling Nintendo 64 launch title.
The Nintendo DS will debut in Japan on 2 December, with a European release to follow in early 2005.
