Slender PlayStation 2 Doubles Sales
Market reacts strongly to release of PStwo.
Sony recently released its newly redesigned PlayStation 2 and the UK market has reacted strongly. According to industry analyst group Chart Track, sales of the PlayStation 2 have more than doubled since the introduction of the new form factor last week.
With Sony just wrapping up the celebration of its six millionth PlayStation 2 sale in the UK, reports indicate that the console could cross the seven million mark shortly.
Four years after the release of the PlayStation 2, Sony continued the trend it began with the PlayStation by releasing a smaller version of its current hardware.
The new console has the innards of the PlayStation 2 crammed into 75 per cent less volume and contains the network adapter built in.
Speaking at the announcement of the slimmed down console, SCEE president David Reeves said: "We did it for PlayStation and now this time for PlayStation 2."
"This totally redesigned, network ready model will demonstrate that PlayStation has once again the design flair and innovation that has made PlayStation the world's best loved and most successful games console."
At present, the PlayStation 2 is selling at a rate of 50,000 units per week in the UK.
