PSP to Launch with Mercury
Industry veteran Archer Maclean speaks.
Following in the finely guided footfalls of Marble Madness and Super Monkey Ball is Mercury, the newest game from industry veteran Archer Maclean. Gameplay for the PSP launch title consists of guiding a blob - or blobs - of mercury through intricate, obstacle-laden levels.
"Without exception, everyone who has seen the early versions of Mercury behind the scenes has immediately loved it," revealed Archer Maclean of Awesome Studios. "It's an incredible game which will define a new genre."
Maclean and his team at Awesome have plenty of experience working with realistic physics models through their numerous virtualisations of pool, and it's a skill that the team has used to good effect.
Maclean described the work required to iron out kinks in the gameplay: "Coding it to run this fast has been staggeringly complicated, yet the results are hugely impressive."
Ignition is planning to publish Mercury at the launch of the PSP, which is currently slated for some time in the first half of 2005 outside of Japan.
"Mercury is going to be huge," said Vijay Chadha, managing director of Ignition Entertainment.
"It's quite simply one of the most brilliant ideas for a game we have ever seen."
