Far Cry Lays Traps for Console Gamers
The wholly rebuilt game based on Far Cry for Xbox and PS2 - latest pics and details..
After a chart-topping, successful run earlier this year, PC first-person shooter Far Cry is console bound - in the form of Far Cry Instincts. But this is not just some hasty, sloppy conversion.
Instead, Far Cry Instincts is a wholly rebuilt game based on Far Cry that is being worked on by the Montreal-based creators of Splinter Cell. In addition to a new look, the game will also feature new gameplay elements.
Speaking at the time of the game's announcement earlier this year, Florence Alibert of publisher Ubisoft said that the company is looking to turn Far Cry into "one of [its] key brands for the future".
In a recent interview, Roxane Gosselin, the game's producer, went into detail about the game's new trap system. The game starts off with Hawaiian shirt-clad John Carver, the lead character, being hunted down by mercenaries.
A big part of how he can deal with these enemies is to lay traps for them, such as branches that whip when triggered and mines for taking out vehicles.
This is a two-way street, though, and Carver is just as susceptible to falling for traps himself, so caution and awareness are the name of the game.
Incorporating a new element into the successful formula runs the risk of unbalancing the game. Ubisoft has considered this and the developers are certain that they'll be able to maintain the pace that garnered the PC version such vocal support.

Far Cry Instincts is scheduled for release on Xbox and PlayStation 2 in March 2005.
