PSP to Support Online Play at Launch
Wireless router companies lick their lips.
While Sony has been keen to push the wireless multiplayer capabilities of the PSP and its games, the company has until recently been less forthcoming about when online gaming would be introduced.
Sony's American arm has confirmed that when the PSP launches in North America in March five of its games will be playable online via what's called infrastructure mode.
The PSP supports two different wireless multiplayer modes. Ad hoc mode allows people within range of one another to play together directly, while in infrastructure mode the Internet is used so that any two PSPs can communicate with one another.
Five North American launch games have been confirmed to support this latter, Internet-enabled, mode, namely: Gretzky NHL (ice-hockey), NBA (basketball), MLB (baseball), Twisted Metal (car-action) and ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails (racing).
Sony has yet to confirm which, if any, of these games will be available at the European launch of the PSP later this year or whether they will be playable online in Europe too.
