Mercenaries Tops UK Weekly Chart
Mass destruction proves unsurprisingly popular.
Gamers in the UK have proved that they're primarily concerned with blowing stuff up at the moment by picking up LucasArts' Mercenaries in droves. The game has debuted at No 1 in the UK and pushed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords down a spot.
But perhaps more interesting - and arguably more distressing - is that Mercenaries is the first original game not tied to a movie licence or existing video game series to take the top spot in nearly two years, since EyeToy: Play debuted back in mid-2003.
Elsewhere on the chart, Namco's new aerial combat game, Ace Combat 5: Squadron Leader, failed to make it into the top 10, but it did end up in 12th position. Also trailing among the newcomers was Dead or Alive Ultimate, Tecmo's online 3D fighting game (reviewed here), which finished further down the list in 19th place.
Here are the top 10 games in the UK for the week ending 19 February as determined by Chart Track:
- Mercenaries (LucasArts)
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (LucasArts)
- The Spongebob Squarepants Movie (THQ)
- Sonic Mega Collection Plus (Sega)
- Need for Speed: Underground 2 (EA)
- World of Warcraft (VU Games)
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Rockstar)
- The Simpsons: Hit & Run (VU Games)
- UEFA Champions League 2004-2005 (EA)
- FIFA 2005 (EA)
