Sony Readies 1m PSPs for US Launch
But will that be enough to satisfy the bottomless American hunger?
When the PSP launched in Japan in mid-December, Sony only managed to have 200,000 units on hand in spite of the rabid demand for the new portable machine. Now, with the US release only weeks away, Sony has allayed fears of a similar shortfall by promising that it will have 1 million PSPs available on launch day.
PSP production has posed a problem for Sony, which was forced to push back the launch of the PSP in Europe and other areas in order to have enough PSPs for the US launch. Sony has already shipped nearly 1.2 million PSPs in Japan and the company has promised that it will ship 3 million by the end of March.
Quite when the PSP will launch in Europe and elsewhere around the world remains a mystery. Sony's European arm has been quiet on the issue, though the console is expected to launch this spring, having missed the previous March launch target.
