Space Invaders Announced for Nintendo DS
The 25-year-old series just keeps giving and giving.
Videogames owe a lot to Space Invaders. Japanese developer Taito's now-simple alien shooter helped make videogames popular, causing coin shortages in the process. Now, more than 25 years after the original arcade machines rolled out, the game is coming to the Nintendo DS.
Space Invaders Revolution brings with it something for greybeards and newbies alike. The original arcade version is there, of course, which you'll be able to control using either the regular control pad or the Nintendo DS touch screen.
But the meat of Space Invaders Revolution is New Era mode, which ups the variety of different enemy ships to 13 and introduces various power-ups, such as shields and support ships.
Gameplay has been tweaked to allow for more variety than the simple strafe-and-shoot of the original and now requires a more planned approach. All this is staged against the backdrop of 20 world-spanning locales, each of which introduces new mission objectives.
Space Invaders Revolution will be released for the Nintendo DS this spring.
