World of Warcraft Hits 1.5m Subscribers
Proof positive that it's more than just fantasy nerds being sucked in Blizzard's persistent online world.
It was already clear in November that Blizzard was on to a winner with World of Warcraft. The game performed excellently on its North America debut and has gone on to break records in several regions around the world. The game has attracted more and more people and there are now over 1.5 million subscribers, according to new numbers released by Blizzard.
World of Warcraft debuted in North America at the end of November and initial demand was so great that Blizzard was forced to hold back selling copies of the game to avoid overloading its servers.
Since then World of Warcraft has launched in Europe and also Korea, where it had the best 100-day opening period of any MMOG. The game has done well in Europe too, where there are now 500,000 subscribed players, with a peak concurrency rate of 230,000.
