Id Readies Quake IV, Ponders Consoles
You better start saving those Air Miles if you want to get an early look at the next Quake instalment.
At a midnight launch event in Texas for the US release of Doom 3 for Xbox on Monday, Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, confirmed that shooter fans should ready themselves for a taste of the upcoming Quake IV. The annual QuakeCon conference, celebrating its 10th anniversary in Dallas this August, will double as the public launching pad for the latest in the seminal series.
"We'll have Quake IV multiplayer to play," Hollenshead told GameSpot. "And because it's also the 10-year anniversary of QuakeCon, we'll have a few other surprises as well."
Id's Doom and Quake are responsible for inducing PC-envy in many a console gamer, but with the power pendulum swinging back in favour of home hardware again later this year, id is considering giving consoles their due.
"John [Carmack - creator of Doom] has been playing with the tech on the new consoles for a bit now," said Hollenshead. "I obviously can't talk about that as it's all under [wraps], but I think developing for multiple consoles will happen at id."
The Doom 3 expansion pack Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, just hitting PCs now, is also being considered for conversion to Xbox, though there's still no definite answer as to whether it's coming or not.
