FIFA Holds Back Doom's Hellspawn
EA's latest mass-market football game stretches winning streak to three weeks.
Even the forces of hell weren't enough to bring EA's FIFA Street down from its No. 1 spot on the UK charts. The smaller-faster-funkier football game claimed victory for the third week in a row, brushing past Sam Fisher's latest escapade in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
And despite the spies and footie stars ahead of it, the Xbox-exclusive conversion of Doom 3 managed to claw into the top three in its debut weekend. Not that the game did badly, mind you. Doom 3 proved popular with first-person shooter fans and had the best opening of any Xbox game bar Halo 2. The PC expansion, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, did not, however, manage to repeat the impressive opening feat of the original.
Things are looking better for Nintendo too, which saw Super Mario 64 DS move back into the Top 10 while Resident Evil 4 re-entered the Top 40 at No. 24. The highly anticipated GameCube horror game unexpectedly dropped off the rankings after just two weeks, in part due to the game selling out in many stores across the country.
Below are the 10 best performing games in the UK for the week ending 9 April, as determined by Chart Track:
- FIFA Street (EA)
- Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (Ubisoft)
- Doom 3 (Activision)
- Gran Turismo 4 (Sony)
- Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30 (Ubisoft)
- Timesplitters: Future Perfect (EA)
- The Sims 2: University (EA)
- Super Mario 64 DS (Nintendo)
- The Incredibles (THQ)
- The Punisher (THQ)
