Jak and Daxter Part Ways for New Games
Sony's platforming buddies to star in two new titles.
Sony's platforming duo Jak and Daxter are back in not one, but two new games, but neither of them is quite what you might have been expecting.
Jak X: Combat Racing is, as the name suggests, a vehicular combat game based in the Jak universe - basically an extension of the driving sections last seen in Jak 3. The game picks up the story where Jak 3 left off and follows the implausible-but-endearing plotline of the series' main characters - all of whom have been poisoned - having to race each other for an antidote. Hemingway it's not, but at least Naughty Dog is trying to set some sort of a backdrop for the automotive carnage.
The action is looking to play out a lot like other character-driven racing games, with plenty of variety in the tracks and race types and lots and lots of weapons and explosions. Jak X: Combat Racing will also feature online and offline multiplayer for up to six players.
The second game, currently running under the title Daxter, is more of a tie-in than a full-bore sequel. The game is headed to Sony's new PSP handheld instead of the PlayStation 2, courtesy of the creators at Ready At Dawn Studios, which features ex-members of the Jak & Daxter development team.
There's little information for Daxter PSP right now, but it seems that it will play more like previous instalments in the series. Ready At Dawn is also promising to include character transfers between Daxter PSP and Jak X: Combat Racing, to allow Daxter character to share in the racing fun.
