Pacino Leads All-Star Scarface Cast
VU Games goes back to remake that other classic gangster movie in videogame form. First screens and details inside.
EA's recently announced Godfather adaptation isn't the only gangster movie-turned-game in the works; Scarface, that favourite of thug rappers the world over, is being reworked in video game form by the developers at Radical Entertainment.
But unlike The Godfather, Scarface: The World Is Yours is closely tied to the film's story and characters. The game puts you in the expensive leather loafers of Cuban refugee Tony Montana and follows a plot - penned by American History X writer David McKenna - that imagines what would have happened had Tony survived the film's climactic shootout.
The game winds through Florida and the Caribbean of the turbulent 1970s, as Tony rises again through the ranks of the underworld, evading government agents and ruthless rivals, to reclaim his lost empire.
To ensure that Scarface: The World Is Yours has an authentic feel, publisher VU Games has signed Al Pacino to reprise his most infamous character, though in likeness only - Pacino will not be voicing Tony Montana. Scarface alumni Steven Bauer, as Manny Ray, and Robert Loggia, as Frank Lopez, join Pacino, and the voice work is rounded out by performances by Jay Mohr, Cheech Marin, Michael York, James Woods and Michael Rappaport.
Radical Entertainment has tailored gameplay in Scarface: The World Is Yours to mirror Tony's personality. For instance, in the movie Tony shouts a lot, so the game will let you make him shout taunts too, which can be useful for goading enemies from their hiding places.
There's also something called Blind Rage mode, which sees Tony fly off the handle, exploding with rage, hurling abuse and gunfire at everything in sight. But while gunplay is an important part of the experience, you'll have to concentrate on gaining respect in the underworld and building up your wealth and reputation to progress through the story for the final face-off with Tony's would-be killer, Sosa.
We'll find out much more about Scarface: The World Is Yours when it makes its public debut at E3 next month. The game is set for release this autumn on PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2.
