Guild Wars Looks to Shake up MMOGs
NCsoft's game breaks with some of the traditions of the genre. New screens.
The problem with most massively multiplayer online games is that they're generally built to reward those willing to give up their real lives to build up their virtual ones. Not so with NCsoft and ArenaNet's game Guild Wars, which is instead skewed to favour quality over quantity.
There's another problem with these games too - monthly fees. Buying a game used to end when you left the shop, but MMOGs have upended that, charging you every month to continue playing in the game world. Guild Wars has done away with this evil as well. Instead, what you get is single massive game world where players from across the globe will gather for battle. There's a deep skill system that forces you to make some tough choices before combat but the developers at ArenaNet have promised plenty of other gameplay options to keep you entertained, whatever your skill level. Guild Wars will be out for PC this Friday, April 29th. You can find out more about the game at the official homepage.
