Art Triumphs Over Evil in Okami
The Viewtiful Joe squad is back with one of the most talked about games from E3. First screens and details.
This year's E3 featured more than a thousand new games from hundreds of developers, and yet despite this near-overwhelming din there were several standout titles, one of which was Capcom's Okami.
Based on Japanese folklore and featuring some of the most unique art to grace a console game, Okami see you play as a white wolf called Amaterasu, the embodiment of the sun god.
In the wake of devastation at the hand of a legendary monster known as Orochi, you must restore the world to its former glory by reclaiming and using the powers of the sun god. In addition to physical attacks, including biting, ramming and various earned special moves, you'll also be able to wield a magical brush that allows you to paint on the game world.
But as fun as the gameplay is, Okami is most notable for its outstanding art direction. The game is being developed by Clover Studios, the same people behind that other visual feast, Viewtiful Joe, and features a textured canvas with painted watercolour vistas and characters. The whole package is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese scroll, which ties in nicely with the game's basis in Japanese folklore.
Sadly, Okami is still early in development2. You'll have to wait until next year's PlayStation 2 release to feel the magic yourself.
