PlayStation 2 Shipments Hit 90m
That's a lot of PlayStations. Do you have one?
Five years after debuting in Japan, the PlayStation 2 has reached its next milestone, with Sony having shipped 90 million units of the market-dominating console.
Sales have been good in all three major regions, with around a quarter of all shipments going to Asia while the remaining 70m were split nearly evenly between Europe and North America.
What's more, the PlayStation 2 has reached the 90 million-shipped mark more than two years faster than the original PlayStation. All those millions of gamers are also responsible for shipments of an eye-popping 800 million copies of the more than 5,000 games out for PlayStation 2.
And despite PlayStation 3 looming large and expected for release starting spring 2006, Sony is confident that gamers will still be buying its current console and games for a while still and has predicted a ten-year lifespan for the PlayStation 2, similar to that of the PlayStation.
