DS Reaches the Top of the World
Nintendo's handhelds have been taken to many questionable places over the years, but nothing quite as impressive as this.
While not all its game platforms are the most powerful, Nintendo has a reputation for building tough-as-hard-nails machines. This was put to the test recently by two climbers who took their DSes to the highest place on Earth - the summit of Mount Everest.
When Neal Mueller and Chris Grubb packed their bags for the summit, they made sure to bring something along for the downtime spent in the base camp, which for the two of them was Nintendo's new dual-screen handheld.
While Grubb was forced to call off the final leg of his climb due to bad weather, Mueller and his DS made the ascent in early June.
Mueller, who has now climbed five of the world's six tallest mountains, said that his DS survived the cold better than any of his other electronics, which included a CB radio, a laptop and mp3 players.
"It was the Nintendo DS units that suffered the worst of it," Mueller told Kotaku. "They were constantly with us in our tents, which were moist and cold. They were right there in our packs so they suffered a lot of wind blasts, and they were dropped."
The climbers currently have no plans to repeat the experiment with Sony's PSP.
