Getting Up Draws Big Names and Criticism
Sean Combs, aka P. *ahem* Diddy, joins the cast while one NYC politician predicts bedlam.
Clothing magnate Marc Ecko's graffiti-inspired PlayStation 2 game Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is Sony-exclusive no more. Xbox and PC owners will be able to take to the building and byways of the fictional city of New Radius when the game makes its worldwide debut this autumn.
Expect the game to sound familiar too. Atari has signed pop culture baron Sean Combs (a.k.a. P. Diddy and Puff Daddy), Sin City stars Brittany Murphy and Rosario Dawson, ex-Batman Adam West, comedians Andy Dick and Charlie Murphy and musicians M.C. Serch and The RZA to voice characters in the game. Lead character Trane will be voiced by hip-hop artist Talib Kweli.
As Atari tells it, the game "uses a thrilling graffiti-driven framework to tell its story of self-expression and the fight for creative freedom".
Not everyone is pleased with the game's focus, though. New York City councilman Peter F. Vallone has come out recently to slam the game, saying that it will promote criminal activity:
"From what Atari's putting out, it appears they want to make crime exciting and to teach children how to get away with breaking the law. I'm just glad they aren't giving out cans of spray paint with this game."
