Americans Give Up TV for Games
This could be a good or a bad thing, depending who you ask.
Americans are not only playing video games more, they're giving up their TV time to do it, according to a new survey out this week.
Researchers for the study, Digital Gaming In America by media company Ziff Davis, asked 1,500 households about their gaming habits and found that a quarter of them had cut down on watching TV over the last year in order to spend more time gaming.
Another 18 per cent said that they would probably watch less TV this year.
Not surprisingly, the number of core gamers choosing High Definition TV broadcast more than doubled to 18 per cent. Microsoft and Sony are both pushing High Definition video in their next generation consoles, which core gamers are already preparing for.
The number of gamers in the US is growing too. The study found that more than 76 million people are playing games, or about a quarter of the entire population. That's up more than 10 per cent from the 67 million people playing games last year.
The best news for Sony and Nintendo is that 40 per cent of those surveyed said that they were planning to buy a handheld during the next year.
