X05: Id Builds Castle Wolfenstein on 360
The grandfather of FPSs gets aimed at the next generation.
John Carmack and the designers at Texan developer Id Software are better known for their work on the seminal - and visceral - Doom series, but it's their former charge that has edged into the spotlight. At Microsoft's X05 conference in Amsterdam this week, Id confirmed that it is working on a new Castle Wolfenstein game for the Xbox 360 and PC.
Besides being the first first-person shooter, Castle Wolfenstein is also much loved for its irreverent mix of the paranormal with those dastardly villains of World War II, the Nazis.
This newest iteration, currently just called Castle Wolfenstein, retreads this familiar path but bumps up the experience considerably, thanks to the gleaming potential locked inside Microsoft's powerful new box.
There's very little in the way of solid details yet, but Id is promising, "a world of unmatched exploration, action, and espionage". Riveting stuff indeed.
