Footie Games Duel for UK Top Spot
Konami and EA go head-to-head to see just whose is bigger.
After the previous week's onslaught of new games, which saw weekly sales surge by nearly 50 per cent, things have calmed down again in the UK. The usual end-of-year suspects are now in place and they're settling in for a busy Christmas period.
Football is still the name of the, er, game, with Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 5 hanging onto the top spot, despite selling half as many copies as it did the week before. Meanwhile, Sega's and EA's footie games have swapped places putting FIFA 06 on the heels of its momentum-blessed opponent.
There wasn't much in the way of new releases last week save Star Wars Battlefront II, whose release was conveniently timed to coincide with the arrival of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith on DVD on Monday.
Skate-god Tony Hawk's new game debuted as well, but the steam seems to be running out of his once-dominating series, which barely managed to make it into the top 10 this time.
The biggest game of the week should by all rights have been Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PSP but Rockstar chose to hold back on that game's debut for a week, possibly to spoil the party for Nintendo, which is bringing out the Game Boy Micro this Friday too.
Below are the top 10 games in the UK for the week ending 29 October, as determined by Chart Track:
- Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Konami)
- FIFA 06 (EA)
- Football Manager 2006 (Sega)
- The Warriors (Rockstar)
- Pokémon Emerald (Nintendo)
- Star Wars: Battlefront II (Activision)
- Ultimate Spider-Man (Activision)
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006 (EA)
- Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (Activision)
- Singstar Popworld (Sony)
