King Kong Blunders in the Dark
It's not often you'll see a CEO tell you not to buy his product.
With King Kong hitting cinemas this weekend, thousands of moviegoers will walk straight out of the theatre and into a game store to pick up the game based on the flick. But developer Ubisoft has a warning for you: don't pick up the Xbox 360 version.
Apparently Ubisoft is having problems segueing into the next generation, and the company's boss, Yves Guillemot, told the BBC that the 360 version, which was made for high-definition TVs, wasn't showing up right on standard sets.
"We have a problem on the 360," Guillemot told the BBC. "The screen is dark on some TVs and it totally changes the experience. When it's dark, you don't see where you have to go."
Ubisoft is currently working on a fix for the game, which could possibly be downloaded over Xbox Live. But patching games after release in something that Microsoft has made a conscious effort to avoid on its console.
"I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't see it when we were developing the game," Guillemot said.
Luckily for Ubisoft, the shortage of Xbox 360s may well play in its favour. With less than 100,000 consoles out in the UK, and most of those going to hardcore gamers, the problems could have been much worse.
"It is the beginning of the high-definition TV era for us. It's a shame, but it happens with new machines. I don't think we will have it anymore."
