James Cameron Ponders MMO Crossover
The man behind The Abyss, Aliens and other lovely flicks is now considering expanded his latest in the massively multiplayer online arena.
Moviemakers have long known that for their films to be successful, the audience must be sucked into the movie's fictional world. James Cameron, director of such blockbusters as Titanic, Abyss and Terminator 2, is taking that idea to the next level.
With Project 880, what the director calls a "completely crazy, balls-out sci-fi" movie, Cameron is going to usher moviegoers into his fictional world through a massively multiplayer online game, according to a report at BusinessWeek.
This is not new, of course. There are already MMO games based on movie franchises, such as The Matrix Online. The difference here is that Cameron is handing you the keys to the movie world weeks before it even opens in cinemas.
For Cameron, getting the audience involved at a personal level is key:
"So much of literary sci-fi is about creating worlds that are rich and detailed and make sense at a social level," said Cameron. "We'll create a world for people and then later present a narrative in that world"
Don't expect to start doing your bit in Project 880's world anytime soon, though. The project is still more than two away from release.
