PSP to Make a Bigger Bulge in Pockets
Reports suggest Sony is getting ready to announce oodles of storage in a new version of the portable.
Since the PSP began its gradual rollout, starting in Japan in late 2004, owners of the sleek handheld have been snapping up memory cards like crazy to store their music, movies and photos (and, for some unscrupulous folks, illegally copied games too).
Although Memory Sticks currently peak at 2 GB, there are already third-party hard drive upgrades available. Now it's being reported that Sony will bulk up the portable on its own.
The PSP will soon find itself with 8 GB of NAND flash memory - similar to that found in popular USB key drives - if a report at tech site DigiTimes is to be believed. According to DigiTimes' unnamed sources, the PSP will get eight 8-Gbit NAND flash memory chips.
It's widely thought that Sony will soon add storage directly to the PSP, though it's been unclear whether the company would go with flash memory or so-called microdrives - miniature hard drives.
Sony is so far steering clear of committing either way, though the release of the PSP Giga Pack (which includes a 1 GB Memory Stick) late last year suggests Sony does care about satisfying this demand.
