PlayStation Winning the Name Game
Not only is Sony winning the hardware race, it's winning the battle for people's minds too.
If name recognition is one of the biggest factors for drawing non-gamers into gaming, then Sony can rest easy in the knowledge that people have been paying attention. A recent survey shows that when it comes to picking out the players in the world of games, Sony has the competition licked.
In a survey of 10,000 North American households by Forrester Research, reported on by game site Joystiq, Sony's PlayStation 3 beat the competition resoundingly, with 72 per cent of responders saying they had heard of the console, as opposed to 58 per cent for Revolution and 57 per cent for Xbox 360.
Given the hype (and hyperbole) surrounding the PSP, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that it came second only to the PlayStation 3, being heard of by 65 per cent of those surveyed. Interestingly, the survey also found that 61 per cent of responders had heard of the Game Boy Evolution, a codename for the successor to the Game Boy Advance.
Spare a tear, though, for Infineon. The creator of the never-quite-was Phantom console came in dead last at less than 50 per cent. Worse still, no responders who had heard of the system said they were interested in buying one.
