Sony Relents, Confirms God of War II
It's already been confirmed twice but this time it's straight from Sony's mouth - so no fears of litigation.
God of War II has had an interesting life so far. It first debuted in leaked press materials earlier this year, leading to muttered denials from Sony. Then it was confirmed in a magazine cover story, which removed all doubt of its existence. And now Sony has officially announced the game, which is coming exclusively to PlayStation 2 next year.
The story picks up from God of War with our man Kratos having defeated Ares and now setting out on a more dangerous and personal trip - one that will change his very destiny. His journey will take him across the world to the very edges of the Earth where he'll face all manner of unspeakable horrors from his past bent on stopping his quest.
The game will play similarly to the original, with new elemental magic and combat moves adding to Kratos' already awesome repertoire. As with the original, God of War II is steeped in Greek mythology. Expect all the creatures you read about in high school popping up for your dismissal.
Sequels have, quite rightly, garnered a reputation of making incremental updates for little reason other than to continue the brand. God of War's award-winning creator, David Jaffe, doesn't deny this, but says that this will be the superior experience nonetheless:
"In the gaming world, it's rare that a sequel equals, let alone eclipses the original, but I think this is going to be the exception to the rule in terms of quality, gameplay and story. I always said that God of War was my dream game, well no longer, God of War II really is the game I've always wanted to play."
Make up your own mind on the issue when God of War II hits PlayStation 2 in winter 2007.
