Sony Kills Off the PlayStation
After more than a decade of service, Sony's aging soldier is allowed to retire.
After more than 11 years and over 100 million sales, the PlayStation has been killed of by its maker. The console that turning gaming on its head and slew the giants of the 16-bit generation will go out of production this year, says GameSpot. Sales will reportedly carry on until Sony has pushed out what stock remains of the redesigned PSone, which is still sold throughout the world.
That's far from the end of the story though. The console's legacy will live on in the two successors it spawned and through the spin-offs it inspired.
Both the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3 are able to play the many classics made for the PlayStation, and even the PSP will be getting a taste.
Sony revealed earlier this month that the PSP is getting a PSone emulator and that players will be able to download classic games. There are still several questions about the new service, but fans of the system are already drawing up lists of games they most want to relive or experience for the first time.
