Elder Scrolls Upsets The Godfather
Surprise as 2K Games' well-received RPG wipes the floor with EA's painfully expensive Godfather game.
Coming in second isn't the end of the world but when you consider how much money EA sank into The Godfather (not to mention the $80 million shellacking it got on Wall Street after the game was delayed past Christmas), the company's bosses are probably a little upset now. Despite carrying the identity of an enormous franchise and garnering generally positive reviews, The Godfather succumbed to 2K Games' latest foray in the Elder Scrolls series.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was a hit on both PC and Xbox 360. Slightly more than half its sales came from the Xbox 360 version, and this helped make it the second fastest selling game in the console's short life, behind this week's No. 5 finisher, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.
General knowledge is still proving popular, too, with Sony's Buzz! Big Quiz gaining a spot and coming in third behind the heavyweight duo. Nintendo will probably be keeping an eye on the game's performance as it prepares to release its education-made-fun title Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? on the DS. It's been a massive hit in Japan (and seems to be doing well in North America), but Europe provides unique challenges.
The only other new entry this week was Konami's first attempt at a football management game in the form of Pro Evolution Soccer Management. Lacking the strong brand of its rivals, the game could only manage a No. 12 finish in its opening weekend.
Below are the top 10 games in the UK for the week ending 25 March, as determined by Chart Track:
- Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (2K Games)
- The Godfather (EA)
- Buzz! The Big Quiz (Sony)
- FIFA Street 2 (EA)
- Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (Ubisoft)
- Fight Night: Round 3 (EA)
- Driver: Parallel Lines (Atari)
- 24: The Game (Sony)
- Black (EA)
- The Sims 2: Open For Business (EA)
