German developer Crytek made a name for itself with the award-winning PC shooter Far Cry. Now that team is swapping the Hawaiian shirt-clad lead character for one wearing a futuristic military outfit in the new us-versus-them alien invasion game, Crysis.

Set in the near future, Crysis begins with a massive rock crashing into North Korea, stirring officials in the US. When that rock turns out to be a 2 km-long spacecraft filled with angry aliens out to enslave us, the antagonistic forces on Earth set aside their differences to show E.T. who's boss.

Your role in the game is as the leader of a military team sent in to infiltrate the invaders' ship, traversing the lush jungles and the frozen lands that sprung up after the induced global cooling. At your disposal are real-world military tactics and a range of land, sea and air vehicles.

As with Far Cry, there's all sorts of whiz-bang technology included in the game that has the end result of making a reactive world where your presence is always felt. Your environment is dynamic too; night turns to day turns to night and the Earth itself fights you with earthquakes and tornados.

If you're not into the storyline you'll be able to whittle away at your social life with the 32-player multiplayer modes. You'll even be able to use the included tools to create your own levels if the ones offered don't do it for you.

Crysis is already building a big buzz, which is only going to make the months until its release seem that much longer. The game will be out only for PC next winter.
