Sony Slashes PlayStation 2 Price
Another $20 off the price means there's now no reason for not owning one.
One advantage of older hardware is that there are a whole lot more games for it than for incoming systems. There's also the price. Sony has made the already dominating PlayStation 2 even more attractive with a new, lower price.
While still short of the magical $99 price level, the new sticker price of $129 represents a $20 drop and pushes the console even further into the mainstream.
(Sony has not confirmed a price drop yet for Europe and did not respond to our queries, but it's a fair bet that the same will happen here soon.)
"While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform," said Sony's American boss, Kaz Hirai.
The "groundbreaking new products" of course refers to the PlayStation 3, which is earmarked for worldwide release in November. There's much speculation about the new console's price, with many worryingly eying $400 or even more.
The PlayStation 2 has led the console race since its debut in 2000. According to the latest figures, there are 101 million consoles out there, and over a billion games have been sold for the system.
