Revolution is Dead. Long Live Wii.
Nintendo's Wii makes a splash as the final name for Revolution is unveiled. Logo and video inside.
The months of speculation are over. Nintendo's next-generation console, which we've come to know and love as the Revolution over the past while, is no more. From this day forth, the Revolution will be known by its new name: Wii.
Nintendo's reasoning behind the name is simple. Pronounced "we", the Wii is Nintendo's answer to everything that is wrong with games right now. Wii will be inclusive. It will provide new experiences. And it will bring people together.
Or as Nintendo puts it on its teaser site:
"While the code-name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other."
The name has a symbolic meaning too. The two "i"s represent people being brought together by the system - something that's at the heart of Nintendo's new direction.
Expect much more Wii from us as E3 draws closer.
