Peter Moore Slams PlayStation 3 Price

Why buy one console when you can buy two, argues Moore.

Given the rivalry between Sony and Microsoft, it's no surprise thatkind words about each other are hard to come by, especially now that Sony has given gamers a better idea of what to expect from the PlayStation 3. The price of Sony's system has rankled gamers worldwide, and Microsoft's Peter Moore isn't too impressed by it either.

"Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?" asked Moore in a Washington Post story. "People are going to buy two [machines]. They're going to buy an Xbox [360] and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3."

Microsoft currently sells the premium Xbox 360 bundle for $400 and the Wii is widely expected to come in much lower than that, perhaps as little as $150, according to some analysts.

"People will always gravitate toward a competitively priced product - like what I believe Wii will be - with innovative new designs and great intellectual property like Mario, Zelda and Metroid," Moore said in a separate interview with Reuters.

The higher-than-expected price of the PlayStation 3 has given many gamers pause and more ardent fans are posting their outrage on message boards across the Internet.

The anger stems from Sony's plan to sell two models of the PlayStation 3 - neither of them cheap. In addition to the complete $600 model, the company is also planning a $500 model that drops WiFi capabilities and support for top-end high-definition TVs and consumer memory cards used in cameras and other electronics.
