Wii Impressions: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Smashing goods news with a solid twist! First screens along with some 'exclusive grabs' of Snake.
E3 2006 is in full swing and Nintendo keeps dropping the bombs. After a completely stuffed first day of E3 the 'big N' held a roundtable with Shigeru Miyamoto in the LA Convention Center Theater. Seating about 200 journalists it was a departure from the usually petite affair. Upon taking our seats it was immediately made clear that something special was in store.
After a few words from Shigeru Miyamoto the lights dimmed and Super Mario Galaxy was born. New characters shown included Wario, Meta Knight (from Kirby,) Pit (from Kid Icarus,) Nintendogs, and a closer-to-naked Samus (Zero Suit Samus.) Besides the many new characters the trailer also showed off what will undoubtedly become the most beautiful environments yet in a Smash Bros game.
The biggest surprise came after the trailer had seemingly ended. The light came up, then dimmed back down, and the iconic Metal Gear Solid dialogue boxes appeared. Then without hesitation Solid Snake accepted his new mission -- to put some serious smash down on Nintendo characters.
After the trailer ended, Super Smash Bros Brawl game designer Masahiro Sakurai came out to join Miyamoto and answer some questions. Regarding how the game would make use of the Wii controller, it was hinted that gamers shouldn't throw away their Gamecube controllers just yet, suggesting a more traditional control scheme.
Launching in 2007, Super Smash Bros Brawl is very early in development and will have even more new playable characters by the time it reaches consumers. Discussed were Sonic the Hedgehog as well as 'other' undisclosed third-party characters. Sonic verses Mario, the very possibility seems too good to be true.
Oh yes, and Wario will have a fart attack. Look for a detailed transcript of the roundtable soon.
