PS3 Not Expensive, Says Kutaragi
Another keeper is added to the list of outrageous quotes from Sony's top man.
Nearly 90 per cent of responders in a poll by Japanese magazine Famitsu said that the PlayStation 3, which will sell for €500 to €600 when it launches worldwide in November, is too expensive. It seems, though, that the problem is that they're looking at it as just a games machine, or so goes the logic of Sony boss Ken Kutaragi.
Kutaragi was out this week in defense of his upcoming "entertainment supercomputer", and his argument hinged in part on Sony's previous consoles, which were also priced above their hardware opponents at the time.
"PlayStation and PlayStation 2 were both ¥10,000 more than their competitors at launch. Yet they both sold to shortages," he told Famitsu, as reported by Next Generation.
While there has been a lot of grumbling since the prices were confirmed, few have gone so far as to say the PlayStation 3 would be a failure because of it. And as Kutaragi and other Sony officials have pointed out, you get a lot for that money.
"If you consider the PlayStation 3 a toy, then yes, it is an expensive toy. However, it is more than a toy. It is a PlayStation 3. And it is the only PlayStation 3. I hope that those who understand this will gladly purchase it."
