DS Lite Surges, Pulls Mario With It
Nintendo's redesigned portable is a hit in the US and it could be just the beginning.
In a little more than a week, people across Europe will be able to trade up their portable experience and pick up the new DS Lite. Nintendo has started splashing the handheld on TV screens and buzz is building. And if the US is any indication, the company could be on to another winner.
The remodelled DS Lite went on sale in the US on Sunday and quickly sold 136,000 units in the first two days. Nintendo reckons this is around 12 per cent more than the Game Boy Advance SP.
People buying the DS Lite also seem to be picking up Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? and New Super Mario Bros, as both have surged around the DS Lite launch. The two games, not coincidentally, were in the Top 3 best-selling games for May in the US.
The party was spoiled somewhat by several retailers who broke the street date and started selling the DS Lite nearly two weeks ago, though that only lasted a few days.
The DS Lite is only available in white in the US, but Nintendo is adding a black variant to the line-up that will be available when the portable goes on sale across Europe on Friday, 23 June.
