Indy Dev Funds PS3, 360 Spy Game
Edge of Reality shuns licenses to bring its first original game to next-gen consoles. First art.
Console launches are usually the time when developers are able to try something new, bringing fresh experiences to early adopters. This is precisely the route Edge of Reality is taking to the next generation.
Until now, Edge of Reality has been mired in the world of ports and licensed games. Most recently it's worked on the video game adaptations of Shark's Tale and Over the Hedge. Its first original game is Cipher Complex.
After a spy satellite is blasted out of the sky, the US government is stonewalled in its efforts to find out what happened. Left with no choice, the government turns to black ops veteran John Cipher.
The game may sound like a Splinter Cell clone, but the developer, which is putting its own money into making the game, says it will offer "brand new styles of gameplay and methods of storytelling".
"The concept and mechanics of Cipher Complex have been incubating in our mind for years," says Edge of Reality's Binu Philip, "and with power of the next-gen consoles, we can finally make our dream project a reality."
That project will be coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2007.
