Grand Theft Steals Chart Victory
It may not be the most adventurous port, but it's still another Grand Theft Auto game, and for a lot of people that's good enough.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories has already been a hit on the PSP, but there are a lot of PlayStation 2 owners out there that don't have a PSP. This is why Rockstar saw fit to allow the game to hop in the other direction, on to PlayStation 2, and it's also why it has proven such a hit, debuting at No. 1 on the weekly sales chart.
The game stormed into the top spot, kicking FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 down one position.
While all this was going on, though, Nintendo's courting of the mainstream seems to be paying off. Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? climbed another few spots this week, taking it further up the chart.
Could we be seeing the same sort of staying power that the game has shown in Japan or as Animal Crossing: Wild World (No. 10 this week) has shown in the UK? Nintendo is hoping we will.
There are now eight DS-exclusive games in the Top 40. Most of those seem to have benefited from the launch of the DS Lite on Friday.
And if you're wondering what happened to Sony's LocoRoco for the PSP, the cute action-puzzle game came in at No. 25 in its opening weekend.
Below are the top 10 games in the UK for the week ending 24 June, as determined by Chart Track:
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (Rockstar)
- FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 (EA)
- Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (Nintendo)
- Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Konami)
- Hitman: Blood Money (Eidos)
- Tomb Raider: Legend (Eidos)
- Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends (Nintendo)
- Rise & Fall: Civilizations At War (Eidos)
- Sensible Soccer 2006 (Codemasters)
- Animal Crossing: Wild World (Nintendo)
