GTA Hangs Tough, Keeps Mario Down
But if things carry on the way they're going, we could see them swapping places next week.
The end of the World Cup means the end of the overwhelming presence of football games on the weekly sales chart. There are only three in the Top 20 this week, down from five last time. The biggest seller is still EA's official tie-in, FIFA World Cup Germany 2006, but sales are down for almost all the football games still on the chart.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is again on top. New Super Mario Bros is snapping at its heals and could take over next week, seeing as its holding steadier than Rockstar's PSP-to-PS2 port.
Movie games are on the rise too. Over the Hedge, which has actually been out for a while already, jumps into the No. 3 spot on the back of the opening of the kid-friendly flick. Jack Sparrow's swashbuckling shenanigans made it into the Top 10 as well.
It's a quiet time of the year for people not into licensed fare, but Sega's Chromehounds, only available on Xbox 360, did manage to eke onto the list. Unfortunately for Nintendo, people aren't biting into Big Brain Academy as much as they did into Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? The game is languishing near the bottom of the Top 40 in its debut weekend.
Below are the top 10 games in the UK for the week ending 8 July, as determined by Chart Track:
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (Rockstar)
- New Super Mario Bros (Nintendo)
- Over The Hedge (Activision)
- FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 (EA)
- Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? (Nintendo)
- Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (Konami)
- Tomb Raider: Legend (Eidos)
- Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Buena Vista)
- Hitman: Blood Money (Eidos)
- Chromehounds (Sega)
