Casual Game Luxor Hits 40m Downloads
And according to the game's maker, players are spending 45 hours a month playing it.
One of the most popular games available is something you probably have never played - but your mother definitely has. The Grand Theft Autos and Halos of the world took a good look today at where the real action is: Luxor.
The Egyptian-themed downloadable casual game is a massive hit on the internet, with more than 40 million downloads since it launched in 2005. So what do you do if you're the publisher of this juggernaut? You release more, of course.
Luxor creator Mumbo Jumbo is following up on the success of the previous games with Luxor Mahjong, which takes the traditional mahjong gameplay and gussies it up with Egyptian power-ups. The company is also working on a full sequel, Luxor 2.
The success of casual games shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Just last month casual game company Trymedia released data that showed some of its players were toiling away for up to 20 hours per week.
Mumbo Jumbo executive Mark Cotton says that most fans play [Luxor] for 45 hours per month and half-jokingly warns that "with the debut of Luxor Mahjong, these folks might never see their friends and family again!"
Time to brush up on those cooking skills, then.
